FAQ
Who can access databases when off-campus?
Remote access to the databases is provided for currently enrolled students, faculty and staff of the Auraria institutions (CCD, MSCD, UCD & AHEC).
Everyone is welcome to
visit Auraria Library in person for access
When I entered my name and id, it said 'patron not found'.
Registered students and current faculty and staff are sometimes denied because their information is not yet in the Library's database.
Come to the Ask Us Desk and register during library open hours. You will need a photo id and something to show you are a current student, faculty or staff (registration, campus id etc.).
Remember to test your access before you leave the Library by trying the Library's GoogleScholar access. You will have to log in to it from everywhere even on campus but it will lead you to the Google Scholar articles that Auraria Library subscribes to.
For those who are never on campus for classes please email the Ask Us desk (aurcirc@ucdenver.edu) and cc your professor. Include the following information:
- your name
- student id
- address
- phone number
- your institutional (UCD, CCD, Metro) email address
- the online course(s) you are taking.
The page just clears the login information I entered and I have to fill it in again.
Verify that your login information is correct.
If it is correct, reset your browsers' privacy settings to
allow pop ups and
set cookies.
You may have more than one pop up blocker working if you have installed tool bars and widgets, and will need to turn all of them off while you are using the databases. See also
The link from my online pages won't work.
My record is fine but I am denied access.
First determine if you owe money to the Library or have overdue materials. Both these things will bar you from accessing the databases from off campus. To examine your library account visit
My Account on the library homepage,
http://library.auraria.edu. If you have overdue materials and/or fines you cannot access the databases until the account is settled.
Next determine what Internet Service Provider (ISP) you use to connect to the internet. Then follow the directions for that provider listed below. Make sure you are using the latest or newest version of your browser.
- WebTV will not work; use a different ISP
- AOL/Compuserve users should first update to the latest AOL version; if it still doesn't work, use an Internet Explorer or Firefox browser instead of the AOL browser to access the databases
- MSN users should use an Internet Explorer or Firefox browser instead of the MSN browser
If you are still unable to connect email distance at auraria.edu.
How do I get an article or book that is not available online?
Articles that are not available electronically
may be requested. The article will be found and conveyed to you electronically.
Note: If the article is physically available in the Library in paper or microfiche format
then what you can request depends on your status.
- Students that live in the Denver Metro area must come to the Library and make their own copies of the article.
- Any faculty member anywhere and students that live outside the Denver Metro area and are taking courses exclusively online may request articles that reside in the Library and the request will be filled if the request includes the information that you are a distance student.
Books. When you make a request for a book, video or cd the item will be delivered to, and should be returned to, Auraria Library. We do not mail books.
However you have some other options for obtaining the book.
- If you are located in Colorado look for the book in Prospector, the combined catalog of the major libraries of the Front Range from Pueblo to Laramie. You may login from your local library if they participate and have the book sent there.
- Locate a library near you that has the book using Worldcat (http://www.worldcat.org/). Auraria Library along with many, many libraries worldwide support this free public service by subscription. Tip: Sign up for a free account and you'll see a lot of features including book reviewing and bookmarking.
- Request the book through your local library's Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service. ILL is a common service in all public and academic libraries.
- Look for an electronic version of the book or if you are a faculty member request that the Library purchase an electronic copy.
- Faculty researchers should consider asking the publisher for a review copy to review or study a new book in depth.
The link from my online pages won't work. It says 'page not found'.
This is often because the link in the course page is too long to fit in the course management system software (Blackboard, Desire2Learn or E-College). You will need to open another browser window and search for the article in Auraria Library's databases. Look at the citation you are given for the article.
- If you have the journal title you can use the 'Journals' tab on the Library home page to determine which databases will provide full text articles from that journal for the years you need.
- You can also type the article title in the Citation Linker. Keep following the links to the full text. If this doesn't work contact a Librarian for assistance.
Another reason is that the link is opening in the same browser window within the course shell. This can cause all sorts of inconsistency problems.
- Right click on the link provided in BlackBoard, Desire2Learn or eCollege and choose 'Open in a new window' or 'Open in a new tab'. Things should go much more smoothly.
The link I e-mailed to myself won't work.
Some of the databases (Gale, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Oxford Music Online, University of Chicago Press and some of the CSA databases like PsycArticles to name a few)
don’t email the link in the rewrite format. It’s a long standing problem. It is true even though you can usually see the link in the rewrite format if you are on campus. So off campus users can’t use the link by clicking directly on it. If you are off campus you need to get into the database again and re-search for the article using the citation in the email or you can add need to add the rewrite wrapper back in.
Note: You may add the rewrite wrapper back in to a link by inserting 0- immediately after the “http://” and then inserting .skyline.ucdenver.edu immediately before the next “/”.
Example: http://0-www.sciencedirect.com.skyline.ucdenver.edu/science/search/allsources.
The JStor PDF of my article won't open.
Occasionally the PDFs of articles found in our databases do not appear. JStor (a
major archive of scholarly articles provided by Auraria Library) is a particular culprit but not the only one. This is a known problem that is caused by an unknown combination of browser versions and settings, operating systems of the computer you are using and whether or not today is your lucky day. The differences even show up between computers right next to each other in the labs.
Don't waste time! Go right to the most successful workaround:
Right (opposite) click on the PDF link and open the PDF in a new window or tab.

JStor Help (
off campus users will need to log in to see the JStor help page)
Notes on web browsers
While some parts of the Library system will work with IE versions as old as 3.0, most won't. Upgrade to the newest or next newest version. Click here to download the latest
Internet Explorer browser.
Netscape was purchased by AOL and development ceased in March 2008. Some IE alternative browsers include Firefox or Google Chrome.
AOL or CompuServe users, and those using MSN browsers, first need to upgrade their connection to the latest version. If there are still problems, often the use of a separate browser (IE or Firefox) will be sufficient to establish a connection. The MSN browser, and the older AOL or CompuServe browsers will NOT support the proxy server.
Confirm your Library patron status
You must be a current student, faculty or staff in good standing to use the Library services from off campus. All other patrons are invited to come to the Auraria Library for access to these materials. Auraria Library
Hours &
Location
Check your access at the beginning of the semester before you need it in an emergency. The Ask Us desk is only open when the Library is open (hours).
You will be denied access to these databases when you are off the Auraria Campus if you:
- owe fines of any size to the Library, or
- have a severely overdue book, or
- are not a current student, faculty or staff of University of Colorado Denver (downtown campus), Metropolitan State College at Denver, or the Community College of Denver.
